Our Outdoor Classroom

At Sunflowers, we place a high importance on outdoor play.

“Let Nature be your teacher.” – William Wordsworth

The children keep weather appropriate clothing at school and also a pair of wellie boots ( very important in this climate!)

We can get outside to play and explore most days- even the really wet days usually allow a window of opportunity in between the showers!

We have four acres to explore and go on frequent nature walks to see what is happening around us. A veggie patch keeps us busy with weeding, watering (sometimes),deciding what to grow, harvesting and eating our own produce. In Autumn, apple cakes, pies and jams feature highly on the menu! We also forage for blackberries and rosehips, but we need gloves to harvest these! :)

In snowy and frosty weather, we can identify and follow tracks on the ground, including deer, badgers, pine-martins and red squirrels.

We also learn about the environment by having a meaningful interaction with it, learning to respect it and to look after it and its other inhabitants.
